Giant Talon E and Explore E, Liv Tempt E and Allure E, plus the men's, women's and kids' e-MTB ranges. The shop sits on the road that climbs out of Abergavenny toward the Beacons, so the e-bike trade here is real, not a token category. The dedicated £95 E-bike Service tier includes Shimano Steps and Fazua firmware updates and battery diagnostics, the kind of work most independents stop short of.

SINCE 2003 · RICHARD AND CLAIRE BOWEN, ON BRECON ROAD

A husband-and-wife bike shop on the road out of town. Both still race.

Richard and Claire Bowen opened Gateway Cycles in 2003 at 5 Brecon Road, the address it has kept ever since. The name is geographical, Brecon Road is the road that climbs out of Abergavenny toward the Beacons, the Black Mountains and Sugar Loaf. Both are competitive cyclists, both still ride, and Claire's sister Jen joined them on the floor as the workshop bench grew.

The dealer relationships built one decade at a time: Trek to Preferred tier, Giant, Scott, Merida, Liv, Electra and Momentum on the front rack; Yeti, Mondraker, Nukeproof, Transition and Saracen on the mountain side for the Bike Park Wales, Cwmcarn, Afan and Dirt Farm Wales regulars. The Companies House structure changed in 2020 (partnership re-registered as Gateway Cycles Limited) but the shop, the bench, the address and the family on the floor are the same as they were on the first invoice.

Fantastic bike shop. Really friendly, knowledgeable and patient. Great atmosphere, a real buzz in the shop, with people coming in and out. Customer review · Sportverse, 2022

THE SPECIALISM · E-BIKE FIRMWARE + BRECON BEACONS TOURIST TRADE

A working road-and-mountain shop in a town where customers actually ride both.

Abergavenny serves road cyclists doing the Tumble and the Black Mountain loops, MTB riders heading south to Bike Park Wales, Cwmcarn and Afan, and tourists hiring or buying an e-bike for a weekend in the Beacons. The bench has to span all three, and the brand index reflects that. Trek Preferred and the mountain marques are not for show, they are what people on the floor on a Saturday morning actually came in for.

  • E-bike firmware, not just mechanicals. The \u00a395 E-bike Service tier includes Shimano Steps and Fazua firmware updates plus battery diagnostics. Most independents stop at the mechanical side. We do the firmware in-house.
  • Brand depth past two hundred marques. Yeti, Mondraker, Nukeproof, Transition and Saracen alongside Trek and Giant. Shimano in every groupset tier, SRAM, Rock Shox, Fox, Hope. The spread you only build if your customers are racing as well as commuting.
  • Female Friendly Bike Shop designation. Listed on The Cycling Experts directory. Liv and Cadex stocked as primary women's ranges, sized and fitted on site. The rack was set up by Claire and is run by Claire.

FAQ · FROM REAL CUSTOMER QUESTIONS

Five questions the shop floor answers most weeks.

If your question is not in this list, phone the shop on 01873 858519 or send a note via email.

I am on holiday in the Beacons and something has gone on my bike, can you fix it while I wait?

Almost always yes. Stand-alone repairs are billed at £30 per fifteen minutes. If the diagnosis is a quick adjustment (gear cable, brake bleed, derailleur tune) we will usually get you back out the same morning. If it needs a part we do not have, we phone the customer with a turnaround before we order. A fair number of our reviews are from passing-through riders who came in with a problem and walked out riding again the same day.

I have an e-bike with a Shimano Steps motor (or Fazua), is the firmware something you can actually do?

Yes. The £95 E-bike Service tier is set up specifically for the firmware update plus the battery diagnostic, alongside the mechanical service work. Shimano Steps, Fazua and the main retail e-systems are all on the bench here. If the motor needs to go back to the manufacturer we handle the paperwork and the loan-bike conversation, you do not have to deal with it.

Are you really a Trek dealer, and what does "Preferred" mean?

Yes. Gateway is on the official trekbikes.com dealer locator and we are at the "Preferred" tier (verifiable on the Trek dealer page). The tier reflects the volume of Trek we move, the training the bench holds, and the level of stock we commit to in advance, so the bike you want is more likely to be on the floor when you walk in. We are also dealers for Giant, Scott, Merida, Liv, Electra, Yeti, Mondraker, Nukeproof, Transition and Saracen.

Can a woman get a bike fitted here without feeling out of place?

Yes, and we have the Cycling Experts "Female Friendly Bike Shop" designation against the listing because of it. Liv and Cadex are stocked as primary ranges, not a token rack to the side. Claire is a competitive cyclist herself and a director of the business. The fit is the fit, not a sales pitch.

Do you take Cyclescheme, finance, and click and collect?

All three. Cyclescheme (we have a 4.8 out of 5 retailer rating going back years), Ride It Away cycle finance, click and collect free across the UK. Fast UK delivery on stocked items. Phone the shop or use the form below if you want us to talk a Cyclescheme voucher through, it is less of a maze than it looks.
